Pongal 2019: Movies to Release this Festive Season

With the festival of Pongal just a stone’s throw away, movie buffs are excited for the much-awaited projects that release on Pongal. The second week of January 2019 or the Pongal week as many call it, holds good prospects for the entire South Indian film industry with many filmmakers releasing their masterpieces during this time. Here’s a list of the movies that are releasing during the festive season of Pongal.


Mikhael is a Malayalam crime drama thriller movie, written and directed by Haneef Adeni. Actor Nivin Pauly will be seen playing a doctor in this neo-noir action thriller. Besides Nivin, the film also stars Unni Mukundan in an important role. While the actor has revealed that his character is named Marco Jr, nothing else has been revealed yet. Along with Manjima Mohan, the movie also has JD Chakravarthy, Renji Panicker, Ashokan, Shanthi Krishna, Kalabhavan Shajon and KPAC Lalitha in pivotal roles. The movie is set to release on 18th January.


Petta stars the Superstar Rajinikanth a.k.a Thalaivar as Kaali, a hostel warden who protects his turf from characters played by Vijay Sethupathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. This star-studded movie also stars Trisha, Simran, Bobby Simha, and M Sasikumar and will be released on January 10th. The first look of Thalaivar from the film has already generated insurmountable hype amongst the masses. The audience has quickly fallen in love with the trailer of the movie as it showcases the Superstar’s trademark gestures and contains references to some of his most iconic roles.


N.T.R. Kathanayakudu is a Telugu biographical drama film directed by Krish Jagarlamudi. As the title suggests, this film showcases the real life of former movie star and politician N.T. Rama Rao. Nandamuri Balakrishna will play the role of N.T. Rama Rao with Bollywood actress Vidya Balan playing Basavatarakam, N.T. Rama Rao’s first wife. The film also features a star-studded ensemble including Rana Daggubati, Manjima Mohan, Sachin Khedekar, Mohan Babu and Murali Sharma. This first part of the two-part biographical movie series will release on 9th January. The film’s sequel, N.T.R: Mahanayakudu will solely focus on the political journey of N.T.R.


Thala Ajith gears up to make this festival season a grand affair with his Tamil movie Viswasam, a perfect mass entertainer. The movie marks the fourth collaboration between Ajith and director Siva after hits like Veeram, Vivegam and Vedhalam. The movie also stars Nayanthara, Vivekh, Thambi Ramaiah, Jagpati Babu and Kovai Sarala in prominent roles. The film is set to release on 10th January making it a perfect competitor with Rajinikanth’s movie Petta. This will easily be one of the biggest box office clashes that Kollywood will ever see in recent years.


After the huge success of Rangasthalam, Ram Charan will be back in action with the action drama Vinaya Vidheya Rama. Bollywood actress Kiara Advani will be the lead opposite Ram Charan, along with Vivek Oberoi playing the antagonist. The film is set to release on 11th January and also stars Prashanth, Aryan Rajesh, Sneha and Ananya in pivotal roles. The teaser of the movie has already gained some massive popularity amongst the fans.
